Let your AI assistant work in your GTD system

NextThing has an MCP server. Paste one URL into Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant, sign in, and it can capture tasks into your inbox, help you process it and tell you what to do next. It works with your real NextThing data, and every change syncs to all your devices.

Requires NextThing Premium. Anyone can connect, but the tools only work on a Premium account. On the free plan the assistant will tell you why it can't help. See pricing

Set it up

Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop)

  1. 1Open Settings → Connectors.
  2. 2Choose Add custom connector and paste the server URL.
  3. 3Click Connect, sign in with your NextThing account and press Allow.

ChatGPT

  1. 1Open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced and turn on Developer mode.
  2. 2Create a connector, paste the server URL and choose OAuth for authentication.
  3. 3Sign in with your NextThing account and press Allow.

Claude Code

  1. 1Add the server from your terminal:
    claude mcp add --transport http nextthing https://mcp.nextthinggtd.com
  2. 2Run /mcp inside Claude Code, pick nextthing and sign in.

Cursor and other MCP clients

  1. 1Add NextThing to your client's MCP config (for Cursor, mcp.json):

  2. 2The first time it connects, your client opens the NextThing sign-in page.

What the assistant can do

  • Capture tasks into your inbox, with a project, contexts, contacts, a due or scheduled date and priority.
  • Read your inbox and process it with you: turn items into next actions, waiting-for, scheduled or someday/maybe, mark them done, or delete them.
  • List your next actions, filtered by context, contact, project, priority or energy.
  • Look up, edit and complete tasks, and find your contexts, contacts and projects by name.

It works with the projects, contexts and contacts you already have and doesn't create new ones. Recurring tasks are completed in the app.

Before you connect

  • The assistant acts as you. Whatever it changes is a real change in your NextThing and syncs to all your devices.
  • It can edit tasks and permanently delete inbox items. A deleted item can't be restored, so check what it's about to do before you let it.
  • To disconnect, remove the NextThing connector in your assistant's settings, or disconnect it at nextthinggtd.com/account/connected-apps.
